Our important passage is:

"In the 1800s the United States was divided over the issue of slavery. The North wanted the country to end all slavery. But the South wanted to keep slaves because more than four million African-American slaves worked in the huge plantation fields there. This disagreement between the North and South led to the Civil War."

This passage is important because now we know why the war happened.

Connections:
-Jack said, "No it's too dangerous," and Annie was really excited to go. I felt this way when I told my brother to come on a ride, and he said, "No, we shouldn't be going on that ride because it looks too scary." (Brooklyn)
-The story reminds me of a video game. In the video game, there is a war. (Skyler)
-Once my dad really wanted me to go on the scariest roller coaster, but it was too scary. This is like the book because people were getting hurt. (Emma)
-My dad was in a war. This connects to the Civil War because they also fight to the death to save the United States of America. (Chris)
-The book reminds me of a kid from the movie my mom said it looked like, C-Jai, and he was in the battlefield. (Aylani)
-My dad was in a war and was a nurse, just like Clara Barton. (Cameron)
-In the story the girl, Clara Barton, has dark hair and I have dark hair. (April)

Our author's writing is very interesting. She makes it seem like it's in your head. It feels like you're right in it.

Be Brave! Jack thought. Be brave!

The author's writing puts in a lot of detail and good word choices.

"Keep low!" cried Clara.
"What's that?" Jack asked.
"Cannon fire," she said.
